Island imperial-pigeon/Piccione imperiale delle isole

Ducula pistrinaria pistrinaria Bonaparte, CLJL 1855

Nomenclature adopted by the Novara  scientists

Carpophaga Aenea var. Nicobarica

From the Reise der österreichischen Fregatte Novara [...] Zoologischer Theil, 1. Band: Wirbelthiere, A. Pelzeln, "Vögel":

"One male was shot at anchorage in Nangkauri harbour by Captain Wüllerstorf, a second shot at Nangkauri by Zelebor. Blood-red irises, beak light yellow-grey, dark lead-grey at extremities, legs purplish-red, yellow-grey on footpads. Total length 16" 9", flight length 2' 4". These pigeons are not rare and are distributed all over the Nicobar Islands. In February there were large flocks in the woods, where there are many fruit trees of the Prunus and Myristica genus. Later in March they were distributed in pairs, and often emitted their low, prolonged u-uh-ruh-uh call. Only tree fruits were found in the stomach. Nicobarians call this pigeon Tamuh, others Mumu. Zelebor
Besides the male mentioned, a female was killed by Pöckh and a specimen whose sex could not be specified by Mr Zelebor. " (pp.105-106)
